Swimmers start second half of season

New Castle's boys swim team split a double dual meet at home Tuesday night, while the Trojan girls lost twice.

The New Castle boys lost to Mount Vernon 55-47 and defeated Connersville 63-39. The girls lost to Connersville 56-44 and Mount Vernon 58-44.

New Castle coach Jennifer Kelsik explained that the team scores look lower than usual because the event scoring in a double dual is 4-3-1 and 6-3-1 for relays.

"Our teams are still in the midst of the Christmas break in training," the coach said.

The usual trio of Kyler Durham, William Kelsik and Matt DeHart led the Trojan boys. Durham was first in the 200 freestyle at 1:51.79 and the backstroke at 56.45. Kelsik won the butterfly at 58.07 and the 200 individual medley at 2:08.31. DeHart was first in 50 freestyle at 23.25 and the breaststroke at 1:05.49.

New Castle won two of the three relays. Durham, DeHart, Kelsik and Nik Davis won the 200 medley relay at 1:45.48. The same four won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.71.

Second placings by the Trojan boys were Davis in the 100 freestyle and Jose Dimas in diving.

Aimee Haddix had the only two firsts for the New Castle girls. She won the 200 freestyle in 2:07.28 and the 500 freestyle in 5:34.92.

Hannah Hawrot was second in the butterfly and individual medley. She joined Courtney Barr, Becca Foster and Haddix to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay. Foster, Hawrot, Haddix and Caitlin Becraft were second in the 400 freestyle relay.
